Australia has the 3rd highest rate of crypto ownership worldwide at 17.8%, according to a survey published by comparison site Finder. Of those crypto owners, more than half (65.2%) own Bitcoin, the 5th highest percentage of all 22 countries.
<h2><strong>Australia Ranks Third-Highest in the Rate of Crypto Ownership</strong></h2>
According to the <a href="https://www.finder.com.au/finder-cryptocurrency-adoption-index" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">findings</a> based on Finder’s Cryptocurrency Adoption Index surveyed from over 41,600 individuals across 22 countries, it was revealed that Australia has the third-highest rate of crypto ownership at 17.8%, followed by Indonesia (16.7%) and the city of <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/news/hong-kong-releases-technical-whitepaper-on-retail-cbdc/">Hong Kong</a> at (15.8%).

Of the nearly 1 in 5 adults in Australia who own some form of crypto, Finder found that Bitcoin is the most popular with 65.2% of Australians owning the world’s largest crypto, the fifth-highest percentage of all 22 countries surveyed.

Ethereum, meanwhile, is the second most popular cryptocurrency with a share of 42.1% while Cardano comes in third at 26.4%, the highest percentage globally.

Two other cryptocurrencies popular among <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/news/australians-are-diversifying-their-investments-with-cryptocurrencies-finder/">Australians</a> are Dogecoin and Binance Coin which stand at 23% and 14.6% respectively, according to Finder’s results.

Among the genders, 59.6% of crypto owners are men and 40.4% are women, which means men are 1.5 times more likely to own crypto. The average figure globally is 1.5 so Australia has the 12th highest male dominance of the 22 countries.

Commenting on Australia’s fascination with cryptocurrencies, Fred Schebesta, CEO of Finder, said:

<h2><strong>The Country Classifies Digital Assets as Legal Property</strong></h2>
Australia takes a proactive stance toward crypto regulation. The country classifies cryptocurrencies as legal property, which makes them subject to capital gains tax.

Meanwhile, crypto exchanges are free to operate in the country, provided that they register with the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) and meet specific AML/CTF obligations. In 2019, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) introduced regulatory requirements for initial coin offerings (ICOs) and banned exchanges from offering privacy coins.
