A bitcoin wallet that has been dormant since the time when cryptocurrency’s anonymous creator was still active has suddenly activated after over a decade. The wallet was last used in 2011, less than two years before the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto sent its final emails to fellow crypto developers.

According to blockchain tracker, Whale Alert, someone just moved their coins for the first time in over a decade from a digital wallet back from the Satoshi-era. Looks like he/she/they waited for over 10 years to finally cash out its initial investment of $8,425, which has turned into $23.7 million at the time of writing.

This is not the first time a so-called “sleeping whale” has awoken this year. There are several instances when a Bitcoin wallet becomes active after a decade. In May, $500,000 worth of Bitcoin was moved from a Bitcoin wallet that was last used in February 2009, just two months after the genesis block was mined. This led to speculations that Satoshi himself could have cashed out concerning the wallet’s history. However, many blockchain analysts refused to buy this.

Similarly, another sleeping whale activated a wallet containing $150 million last month. While Bitcoin’s circulating supply is 21 million, there are several millions that have been stuck in decades-old wallets whose access keys may have been lost or forgotten forever. The most valuable dormant wallet <a href="https://bitinfocharts.com/bitcoin/address/1FeexV6bAHb8ybZjqQMjJrcCrHGW9sb6uF" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">currently</a> contains nearly 80,000 BTC worth $3 billion at today’s prices.

According to data from <a href="https://bitinfocharts.com/top-100-dormant_9y-bitcoin-addresses.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">BitInfoCharts</a>, the cumulative sum held in bitcoin addresses that have been dormant for more than nine years contains $20 billion, which is nearly 2 percent of bitcoin’s entire market cap.
