The Republic of China <a href="http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1168878.shtml">announced</a> Monday; it launched a blockchain-based identification system for smart cities. The system aims at promoting the connectivity between the cities, according to the local news outlet, Global Times.

Three institutes in Shijiazhuang jointly launched the <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/crypto/catalonia-to-launch-a-dlt-enabled-id-forum-non-controlled-system-by-the-government/">ID system</a>, per the report, which also cited the state-run Xinhua news agency. In the words of Zhang Chao, the director of Zhongguancun Industry &amp; Information Research Institute of Two-dimensional Code Technology.

"The system will be independently distributed and managed by China, with a unified distribution rule, a resolution of distributed storage and tamper-resistant code." 

The independently developed identification system comes as a part of China's significant move to establish smart city infrastructure using blockchain. The report further noted that North China's Hebei Province and cities nationwide already applied for their city identification code.

Following the report, the cities, once approved on the system, get a unique global digital identification code. As noted, the smart city code system bases on node code in line with international standards.

Through the identification code, the idea for a smart city could is achieved. The system recognizes the code and enables connectivity and data sharing between the cities. 

The People's Republic of China reportedly began smart city development in 2016, as a lot of people migrated to cities. According to the report, it led to a higher demand for urban planning, construction, management, and services. This resulted in a huge challenge to infrastructure.

In addition to that, He Kejia, the Vice President of the China Research Society of Urban Development, said

"There was no unified code for industries and departments in today's rapid development of the internet and emerging information technology, causing problems of data interoperability and application incompatibility." 

These challenges possibly resulted in the development of smart cities. Therefore, the progress today is another effort to address the needs, while also promoting the connectivity between cities.
