On October 22, 2020, Amsterdam-based WordProof initially made the announcement of the new timestamping tool at the London BlockDown 2020 3D virtual blockchain conference.
Head of Product at WordProof, Jelle van der Schoot, stated that the company's vision is to be the most user-friendly timestamping tool for its use across all content management systems and e-commerce platforms.
He also said:
"Adding support for Ethereum marks an important step towards achieving this goal, so we’re excited to welcome the Ethereum community!"
The company also supports timestamping on the EOS and Telos blockchains. Users don't need to know any fancy blockchain experience to use the plugin.
Timestamping is a unique and universal fingerprint, also known as the "hash" for all posts, pages, and media content. Also, the plugin’s website adds that any content changes will also change the hash. The hash is added to the Ethereum blockchain with a date and time so that users can prove the published content at a specific time.
WordProof has won a €1 million grant from the European Commission in the Blockchains For Social Good competition. It defeated 175 other teams from all over Europe.
This is not the first time WordPress is trying to integrate decentralized technologies into its ecosystem. In April 2020, blockchain startup incubator Draper Goren Holm had revealed the first DEX plugin for the CMS platform. The plugin allows owners of websites to feature a built-in DEX that enables users to exchange between cryptocurrencies and stablecoins.
Moreover, the official WordPress site itself has already three pages of plugins categorized as ‘crypto.’ The most popular plugin includes a crypto payments portal with over 10,000 active installations and a crypto price ticker widget with over 7,000 active installations.
