A total of 49 malicious chrome extensions has been removed by Google from its Web browser. The Chrome extensions which were <a href="https://www.financemagnates.com/cryptocurrency/news/google-bans-49-fake-chrome-extensions-for-stealing-crypto-data/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">developed </a>by a Russian person or group was stealing from Google users, important crypto wallets information.

Mycrypto's Director of Security, Harry Denley wrote a detailed medium poet about how these extensions were mimicking the popular cryptocurrencies wallet and applications like Trezor, Keepkey and Ledger etc.

Denley was the first to come across these malicious activities and reported to Google that these extensions were attacking users private keys, and other raw details. These extensions were fooling the customers and enticing them to download it through their fake network which gave them a 5-star rating on the platform and good reviews.  These extensions were loaded with malicious files and the derived data was sent and saved on a Google Form or a remote server.

The report by Denley states that the attackers were patient and didn't hack immediately and instead, waited to exploit their victims. They bid their time and waited for wallets with more value in them and were cautious in their process.  The medium post also stated that they reached this conclusion after sending funds to these addresses but the hackers didn't immediately take the fund.

While the extensions hacking these <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/news/top-bitcoin-wallets-of-2020-to-secure-your-digital-coins/">cryptocurrencies wallets</a> have been removed, the perpetrator is yet to be identified, leading to the belief that there could be more significant numbers of such apps and Google needs a more robust approach to identify them.
<h2>Extension Hacks Not New For Crypto Wallets</h2>
Incidents like these have been recorded in the past where crypto wallets of legitimate users have been hacked previously through the use of google extensions. Just recently, a fake ledger chrome extension stole almost $2.5 million from crypto users.
