A UK citizen, named Nathan Wyatt, has pleaded guilty for being part of ‘The Dark Overlord’ hackers outfit, according to a notification released by the US Department of Justice (DoJ).

The department further stated that Wyatt will have to serve in jail for five years.

Dark Overload Member Demands Bitcoin Ransom

As per the court’s filing, the hacker’s outfit hacked different US companies and stole medical records, client files and personal information of the individual. In order to return all these information to the companies, the Dark Overlord demanded the firms to pay Bitcoins worth over $75,0000 and $300,000.

It has been alleged that in the year 2017, the hackers’ group even hacked the video-sharing giant Netflix.

DoJ, in its statement, has mentioned that soon after the companies’ information was compromised, Wyatt used to contact them through mail or phone calls. As a member of the Dark Overlord group, he used to make demands of Bitcoin ransom from the victim.

Wyatt did not stop there, in some cases, he even involved the family members of the victim and threatened them to make their sensitive information public.

In one of the cases, the culprit mailed the victim’s daughter stating, “Maybe your [sic] just a dumb rich girl who doesn’t [sic] understand the dangers here. I’m gonna try Chels. she may have an iq. stay hot.”

UK Authorities Arrested Culprit In 2019

However, his criminal career did not last long.

During the investigation, the agent found about the phone numbers which Wyatt was using for making ransom calls, were all registered in his name. Later, the investigating team got to know that he was a member of the Dark Overlord hacking group.

In the year 2017, the UK authorities arrested him but later in the year 2019, Wyatt was sent to the US to face the charges.

On September 21, the US federal court found him guilty on six charges, and therefore, sentenced him to five years behind the bars and also ordered him to pay around $1.5 million in restitution.
