Thursday, October 17 - Bitcoin (BTC) is just above the USD 8,000 price mark, while XRP <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/crypto/bitcoin-will-be-mined-with-wind-energy/">shows</a> impressive gains in the day.

For most of the day, the world's largest cryptocurrencies have been trading within a narrow range of USD 8,000 to USD 8,100. BTC traded from an intraday low of around USD 8,010 to USD 8,135 before reaching its current price of USD 8,062, showing a subtle gain of around 1% in the last 24 hours. According to CoinMarketCap, Bitcoin's market capitalization is USD 145,770,721,403.

Cointelegraph reported today that notorious crypto-skeptic Nouriel Roubini had finally admitted that Bitcoin is "a partial reserve of value." However, his comment was quickly followed by continued criticism:

"Perhaps <a href="https://bitcoin.org/en/">Bitcoin</a> is a partial reserve of value, but it is not a unit of account, it is not a means of payment, it is not scalable [...] despite its recovery earlier this year, it has lost 60% of its value since its peak, so I don't see it going anywhere frankly.

<a href="https://www.ethereum.org/">Ether (ETH)</a>, meanwhile, is currently at $176 per currency. Altcoin number one has been trading relatively flat for most of the day, while slowly dragging to its current trading price, rising a little over 1% at the time of publication.

On the other hand, XRP saw a 5% increase in the day. The third-largest currency by market capitalization is performing strongly and is making its way to USD 0.30. XRP is now trading at almost USD 0.30 per currency.

All 20 major currencies are showing positive gains between 1-4% in the last 24 hours, with XRP taking the lead as the best player of the day, as mentioned above.

Although not in the top 20 currencies by market capitalization, the 25th <a href="https://nem.io/">NEM cryptocurrency</a> (XEM) has seen impressive gains of almost 14% in the last 24 hours to trade at USD 0.041 at the time of publication.

The global limit on the cryptocurrency market rose from USD 217.2 billion to USD 222.2 billion, with Bitcoin accounting for 66% of the total.
