The leading telecoms provider of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Zain Group, has recently <a href="https://www.hedera.com/blog/a-mena-region-first-zain-group-joins-hedera-governing-council" target="_blank" rel="noopener">associated </a>itself with the Hedera Governing Council.

In today’s time, the Zain Group provides its services to more than 49.5 million of its customers that are present in eight markets of MENA.
<h2>First Company From MENA Region</h2>
From the MENA region, Zain Group has become the first company to cooperate with the Hedera Governing Council. Prior to Zain group's addition, some of the popular and prestigious companies such as Boeing, Deutsche Telekom, DLA Piper and many more have joined the Hedera Council.

People or organizations who don’t know each other or are not able to trust each other could use the Hedera Hashgraph to get connected and securely make transactions.

This participation would help Zain Group to know about the trends and the applications present in the DLT space of Hedera Council. Now, in its own field, the group can even create new services.
<h2>Zain Group’s Upcoming Services Can Use Blockchain Technology</h2>
The existing members of Hedera council manage a node on the public network of Hashgraph and without their approval, the codebase of the platform could not be updated.

The source code of the platform is open for review. The platform uses a consensus algorithm which is based on hashgraph to allow for multiple branches of blocks.

The CEO and the vice-chairman of the Zain Group, Badar Al Kharafi, has recently stated that many of the emerging services and applications of the Group like mobile money, e-health, drones, Internet of Things could use the blockchain technology to enhance their features.

While developing the platform of Hedera, the developers kept in mind that they have to create an energy-efficient mechanism which does not harm the environment.

The first academic institution that became the part of the council is the University College of London. In May 2020, after merging itself with the council the institution started analysing into central bank digital currencies and blockchain antitrust.
