Ethereum consistently ranks among the most-searched assets in crypto, and for good reason: it sits at the center of nearly every major trend in the industry, from decentralized finance and tokenized securities to privacy tools and layer-2 scaling. If you have encountered the ticker ETH and want to understand what it actually is, how it works, and why it keeps drawing attention, this guide covers the essentials.

<h2>What Ethereum Is — and How It Differs from Bitcoin</h2>
Ethereum is an open-source, decentralized blockchain network launched in 2015 by a team that included Vitalik Buterin. Like Bitcoin, it maintains a distributed ledger secured by a global network of computers. Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum is programmable: developers can write and deploy smart contracts — self-executing pieces of code that run automatically when predefined conditions are met, without any intermediary.
That programmability is the defining feature. A smart contract can represent a loan agreement, a trading rule, a membership token, a vote, or virtually any other conditional logic. Because the contract lives on the blockchain, it executes exactly as written and its history cannot be altered. This makes Ethereum the infrastructure layer for an enormous range of applications that would otherwise require a bank, broker, or other trusted third party.
ETH is the native currency of the network. It serves two purposes: it is used to pay gas fees — the small computational charges required to process any transaction or run any smart contract — and it functions as the asset that validators stake to secure the network.

<h2>How Ethereum's Proof-of-Stake Network Works</h2>
Ethereum completed its transition from an energy-intensive proof-of-work system to proof of stake in September 2022, an upgrade the community called The Merge. Under proof of stake, the network is secured not by miners competing to solve computational puzzles, but by validators who lock up — or stake — ETH as collateral. Validators are selected to propose and attest to new blocks of transactions; if they behave honestly, they earn rewards. If they attempt to cheat, a portion of their staked ETH is destroyed, a penalty called slashing.
The shift dramatically reduced Ethereum's energy consumption and introduced a mechanism by which ETH holders can earn yield by participating in network security, either by running their own validator node or by delegating through a staking service. Staking requires a minimum of 32 ETH to run a solo validator, though pooled staking services allow participation with smaller amounts.
Ethereum also relies on a growing ecosystem of layer-2 networks — separate blockchains that process transactions off the main chain and then settle the results back to Ethereum. Layer-2s dramatically reduce the cost and time of individual transactions while inheriting Ethereum's security guarantees. Networks such as Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base have become major venues for DeFi activity and everyday transfers.

<h2>Why Ethereum Is Getting Attention Right Now</h2>
Ethereum's persistent position at the top of search trends reflects its role as the connective tissue of the broader crypto ecosystem. Whenever tokenized assets, decentralized exchanges, stablecoin infrastructure, or crypto regulation make headlines — as they have repeatedly in recent weeks — Ethereum is almost always involved at the protocol level. Readers searching for context on those stories naturally arrive at ETH.
One specific development drawing attention is the relaunch of zk.money by Aztec Labs. Aztec Network is a privacy-focused layer-2 built on Ethereum that uses zero-knowledge proofs — a cryptographic technique that allows one party to prove a statement is true without revealing the underlying data. In practical terms, this means a user can prove they have sufficient funds to complete a payment without disclosing their balance or transaction history to the public.
Aztec Labs relaunched its self-custodial zk.money wallet on Aztec Network, enabling users to make private stablecoin payments using human-readable tags rather than long cryptographic addresses. Self-custodial means the user holds their own private keys and no third party controls the funds. The relaunch is notable because financial privacy on public blockchains has been a persistent challenge: by default, every Ethereum transaction is visible to anyone who inspects the chain. Zero-knowledge technology offers a way to preserve that openness at the protocol level while giving individual users meaningful confidentiality for their payments.
Privacy tooling on Ethereum has had a complicated regulatory history, and the reappearance of a consumer-facing privacy wallet signals that developers continue to invest in this area despite that complexity. For users who want to transact in stablecoins without broadcasting their financial activity, the Aztec approach represents a technically sophisticated option worth understanding.

<h2>Ethereum's Role in DeFi, Tokenization, and Beyond</h2>
Ethereum's smart-contract platform hosts the majority of decentralized finance (DeFi) activity — lending protocols, decentralized exchanges, yield aggregators, and stablecoin issuance mechanisms that operate without a central company running them. Users interact with these protocols directly from their wallets, and the rules of each protocol are encoded in publicly auditable smart contracts.
Beyond DeFi, Ethereum has become the preferred settlement layer for tokenized real-world assets — digital representations of bonds, equities, real estate, and commodities issued on-chain. Several major financial institutions have issued tokenized funds and securities on Ethereum, drawn by its established security record, deep liquidity, and the composability of its ecosystem (meaning different protocols can interact with one another programmatically). Recent industry moves — including tokenized stock platforms and institutional collateral arrangements covered in <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/news/ethereum/">CryptoKnowmics Ethereum coverage</a> — frequently settle on or connect back to Ethereum.
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs), decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), and on-chain identity systems also largely originated on Ethereum, though activity in these areas has matured and diversified across multiple chains.

<h2>Risks and Practical Considerations for ETH Holders</h2>
Ethereum is a mature network with a long track record, but it carries risks that any user or investor should understand. Smart-contract bugs have led to significant losses in DeFi protocols over the years; the code may be public, but that does not guarantee it is free of vulnerabilities. Users interacting with DeFi applications take on the risk of the specific contracts they use, not just the underlying Ethereum network.
Gas fees, while substantially lower on layer-2 networks, can spike on the main chain during periods of high demand, making small transactions uneconomical. Staking involves a lockup period and exposure to slashing risk if a validator misbehaves or is misconfigured. And like all crypto assets, ETH's price is volatile — its value can move sharply in either direction over short periods.
For those exploring privacy tools like Aztec's zk.money, the regulatory environment around on-chain privacy remains unsettled in many jurisdictions. Users should understand the legal context in their region before using privacy-preserving applications. <h2>The Takeaway</h2>
Ethereum's sustained search interest is a reflection of its centrality to the crypto ecosystem rather than any single news event. It is the platform on which most of the industry's significant experiments — in finance, privacy, tokenization, and governance — are being conducted. Understanding how ETH works, what validators and gas fees do, and how layer-2 networks extend the base chain gives readers a durable foundation for following <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/news/cryptocurrency-news/">cryptocurrency news</a> across any market cycle. The Aztec zk.money relaunch is one concrete example of how that ecosystem continues to develop, adding capabilities that address real user needs without requiring changes to Ethereum's core protocol.
