On Saturday, the Tianjin Municipal Finance Bureau advised government employees to create digital yuan wallets in readiness for the system's continued expansion.

According to local media, Zhejiang Daily, the Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine has begun accepting digital yuan payments, making it the first hospital in Hangzhou.

According to the Guangzhou Daily, the Guangdong People's Hospital Huifu Branch has also begun taking digital yuan, making it the first hospital in the province to do so.

The digital yuan is now accepted for public transportation and municipal services, including metro, buses, trains, highway toll gates, taxation, and social insurance.

Following its initial rollout in October 2020, China's digital yuan, or e-CNY, is being tested in 23 cities.

The People's Bank of China said in January that total e-CNY transactions would hit 87.565 billion yuan (US$11.238 billion) by the end of 2021.
