According to Mask Network's Wednesday announcement of the acquisition through its subsidiary Social Coop Ltd, Pawoo is Mastodon's second-largest server, with about 800,000 members. Since 2017, Pawoo has operated out of Japan. In accordance with the agreement, Mask will now be in charge of its upkeep and operation.
The Mastodon environment is not new to Mask. The network claimed to have helped construct the official iOS app for Mastodon alongside the Mastodon team members and New York-based design studio Lickability. It also claimed to have maintained two of the most popular servers, mstdn.jp, and mastodon.cloud.
According to Mask Network, the acquisition of Pawoo represents a further step in the creation of a decentralized social network. The statement said the network aims to play a significant role in fostering Pawoo's future growth, that of the decentralized social network, and that of the free, open internet.
About 2 million people use Mastodon every month, according to the platform, which was created in 2016. Recently, it attracted public notice when Twitter momentarily disabled its account and forbade promotions linking to Mastodon servers. According to reports, Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, called it "a mistake" to remove accounts for sharing links to the competing Mastodon platform.
