Soon the US Department of Agriculture would start using blockchain technology to trace the supply chain of organic products 

The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) of USDA <a href="https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2020-08-05/pdf/2020-14581.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published</a> a report on August 05, stating that the electronic tracing system which uses the digital ledger technology (DLT), would help them in tracing the supply chain of organic products.
<h2>DLT Will Be Tracing Complex Supply Chain</h2>
The report published by the agency notified that the DLT would allow them to trace the item level in the complex supply chain. Also, the technology would offer a secure, verifiable, and transparent traceability of the product.

Further, it has been mentioned in the report,
<blockquote> “Critically, DLT can also protect confidential business information and trade secret information by automatically restricting sensitive information to authorized entities.”</blockquote>
The agency has specified that before the technology gets implemented in the organic food industry,  it would need to be developed and will need more time for that.

The newly proposed amendment by the USDA suggested that DLT implementation in the organic food industry would not be very easy, it would have to face many barriers like inadequate access to technology in rural areas, acceptance of interoperability and cost distribution.
<h2>USDA Did Not Reveal Name Of DLT</h2>
Although the USDA has announced to use the DLT tech, still it did not have revealed the name of it. However, it has given several examples of pilot programs that are being used by companies like Walmart, Nestle, and Bumble Bee.

The <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/news/what-is-blockchain-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blockchain technology</a> is being used by Walmart to trace the mangoes and pork, the Swiss-based food retail Nestle is presently testing the technology to trace the supply chain of milk. Bumble Bee has been using blockchain tech to monitor the supply chain of yellowfin tuna from Indonesia.

The report additionally mentioned that before October 5 the agency is accepting the comments from the organizations or businesses, which are going to be part of the global organic agricultural product supply chain.
