One of the convicts behind moderating content on AlphaBay, Bryan Connor Herrell, will now be spending 11-years of his life in jail, <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-edca/pr/colorado-man-operating-under-nicknames-penissmith-and-botah-sentenced-11-years-prison" target="_blank" rel="noopener">declared</a> the US Department of Justice on September 01.

AlphaBay was a dark web contraband marketplace which was being used for facilitating illicit activities. The vendors or the purchasers could enter into the market through the Tor web browser and then they could sell or purchase drugs, guns, stolen identities and many other illegal items.
<h2>AlphaBay Involved In Illicit Activities</h2>
It is to be noted that AlphaBay was used mainly for selling and purchasing drugs.

AlphaBay is considered to be a by-product of Silk Road, a darknet site which was ten times larger. 

The report stated that AlphaBay remained operational for three years and then in the year 2017, after seeing its last days, the darknet site was shut.

Further, it has been stated that the site was annihilated by the law enforcement operation that linked three countries together. While the dismantling process was going on, the Canadian Police confiscated the servers of AplhaBay in Quebec, and the US officials were pursuing to deport Alexandre Cazes, one of the administrators at AlphaBay, to the US.

But as per the report, later Cazes committed suicide in the Bangkok jail cell. The report states that the former administrator at AlphaBay hanged himself from a towel in the jail cell.
<h2>AlphaBay Got 400,000 Users</h2>
Till the time, the enforcement agencies had taken action against the site and shut it down, it already had got 400,000 users, who were using the marketplace for trading illicit products. 

AlphaBay had also become a go-to place for those people who wanted to buy drugs online. 

According to the reports, individuals active on this site were using digital assets like Bitcoin, Monero and Ether for purchasing any products, that is because they provide some anonymity.

While announcing its decision the DoJ stated, 
<blockquote>“As a moderator on AlphaBay, Herrell, who went by the nicknames “Penissmith” and “Botah,” settled disputes between vendors and purchasers on the site.”</blockquote>
Herrell also looks after the suspicious activity on the site as he did not want his users’ accounts to get hacked.
