The City of Jackson, Tennessee is set to become the first city in the United States to add cryptocurrencies as a payroll conversion option for the city’s employees.

According to local media outlet <a href="https://www.jacksonsun.com/story/news/2021/12/20/city-employees-could-see-cryptocurrency-payroll-conversion-options-next-year-says-mayor/8888669002/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jackson Sun</a>, the City of Jackson will make history as the first city in the United States to allow cryptocurrency payroll conversion options for its residents.

Mayor Scott Conger noted that since the city cannot hold Bitcoin on its balance sheet due to legal restrictions, therefore the city cannot pay its residents directly in crypto. Instead, employees' payroll will be converted to cryptocurrencies by a third party.

The city has already opened a request for bids from companies that will be responsible for converting cryptocurrencies. The bidding process will begin on December 22 and be reviewed by the committee by February.

<h2><strong>Towards Crypto-Friendly Policies</strong></h2>
Miami mayor Francis Suarez has also been canvassing for the flagship cryptocurrency. He recently announced that he would be taking his next paycheck in Bitcoin joining New York City Mayor-Elect Eric Adams and Tampa Mayor Jane Castor.

Bitcoin salaries haven’t been used by any local government in the United States yet. Only Conger and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez are even thinking about it.

According to Conger, it would be easier to implement such a plan in a big city like Miami because of fewer roadblocks. Despite this, he remains optimistic about his <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/news/the-dubai-world-trade-centre-will-act-as-a-hub-for-virtual-assets-and-cryptocurrency/">crypto</a> endeavors, saying  <em>“Why not Jackson? Why can't we do something that can offset the current economic system that we have?”</em>
