The Cardano network has now seen the minting of over five million NFTs, doubling the figure seen at the end of last year. According to data from pool.pm, the number of native assets issued on the Cardano blockchain is presently 5,019,030, with 54,831 distinct minting policies.

The Cardano blockchain can generate its own tokens or ‘assets’, interact with them and also delete them when necessary. The term “Native” indicates that users can interact directly with these custom assets without having to use smart contracts.

In 2020, Cardano creator Charles Hoskinson predicted that the Cardano ecosystem would grow because there would be “hundreds of assets, thousands of dApps, tons of interesting projects, and a lot of uniqueness and utility.”

However, Hoskinson revised the forecast when he pointed out that millions of assets were being created on Cardano when he replied to a critic who claimed the forecast hadn’t come true.
