Tether, the stablecoin issuer, is again embroiled in a court battle on accusations of misrepresenting its stablecoin backing. The Department of Justice is investigating whether Tether executives committed bank fraud, and the case was resolved with the New York Attorney General in February for $18.5 million.

In October, Tether <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/news/u-s-cftc-fines-tether-and-bitfinex-42-5m-for-misleading-customers/">was fined</a> $41 million by the independent US derivatives regulator Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) because it only held enough fiat reserves in its accounts to back the USDT in circulation for a quarter of 26 months from 2016 to 2018.

Tether has been taught to make itself more amenable to regulators due to a slew of mishaps.
