Samuel Reed, The CTO of BitMEX, has come forth to provide a few updates regarding the attack on BitMEX on 13th March. A few days ago, <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/crypto/bitmex-promises-to-offer-detailed-report-for-its-45-minutes-shut-down/">Arthur Hayes came forward to defend the exchange</a> of any malicious intent when the platform went down. He pointed out that it was the DDoS attack which harmed the trade.

Samuel Reed previously lamented the attack and said there was a botnet behind it. The vulnerability was visible to the attackers in February only, but they waited for the perfect time to pounce. The move was immensely crafted, and they deployed a “specially-crafted query to the Trollbox feature." This led to a malfunctioning in the data optimizer and an inefficient query plan.

Samuel Reed attempted to explain the attack and suggested that the team misjudged it previously as a hardware issue. This was due to the CPU reaching 100% usage, even then 99.6% CPU appeared in an ideal state.

A similar attack was carried out at 12:56 UTC, but by that time BitMEX halted it by blocking the traffic, manually cleaning it, and then resume the operations, as usual, adding further the blog said
<blockquote>“As part of our internal post mortem, the BitMEX team identified 156 accounts for which Last Price stops were clearly erroneously triggered on ETHUSD, caused by the unintended late processing of market orders during the first downtime at 02:16 UTC.”</blockquote>
<h2>BitMEX Gives it Back</h2>
BitMEX found a way to refund its users by calculating the printed Index price at every stop that triggered an error on the exchange. In totality, A 40.297 XBT was refunded. The attack that led to the 45 minutes shutdown of BitMEX has led to speculations that it was a well-thought plan carried out by the exchange in correlation to the falling bitcoin price. However, Arthur Hayes and S.Reed both have maintained their innocence.
