Furthermore, Tor recommended the BottlePay wallet for donations. This platform allows users to search for The Tor Project inside; and transfer cryptocurrency without copying and pasting addresses. The Lightning Network is a double-layered payment protocol for the Bitcoin network. The network aims to expedite payments and address the network’s scalability problem.

As an alternative, the service also allows donors to make contributions through a tweet. The wallet also allows its users to donate Bitcoin directly, or automatically convert United States dollars, euros, sterling pounds, Australian dollars, Brazilian reals, Canadian dollars, Swiss francs and 15 more fiat currencies.

In addition, the development of the Tor network is mostly funded by U.S. government agencies. Additionally, Its parent technology, onion routing, was first financed by the U.S. Office of Naval Research in 1995. Despite financial support from official organizations, the technology has been widely used on the dark web for illegal sites and services such as the Silk Road.

On the other hand, the network is also adopted by political leaders living under oppressive regimes; and by whistleblowers finding a way to anonymously expose official wrongdoing to WikiLeaks and similar platforms.

Particularly, as a non-profit group, the Tor Project relies totally on donations from its users; and fellow advocates of online freedom. As such, it also runs a permanent donation kitty; to help it keep create tools to allow users to browse without fear of surveillance.

In conclusion, the fixed feature on the project’s site allows for donations to be made in fiat currency, as well as other crypto-assets besides Bitcoin. It currently accepts the following digital currencies: Augur (REP), Bitcoin (XBT), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Dash (DASH), Ether (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Monero (XMR), Stellar Lumen (XLM), Zcash (ZEC), and Dogecoin(XDG). Advocates of the Tor Project’s work can also contribute to the fund via either PayPal or credit card.
