'All 350 Spanish MPs will <a href="https://news.bitcoin.com/bitcoin-for-spain-congress-btc/">get Bitcoin</a> in their inboxes as a part of an educational initiative to promote cryptocurrencies in the country.

The move followed a similar campaign to that of “Crypto for Congress” that sent bitcoins to all its Members of U.S. Congress by the Chamber of Digital Commerce.
<h2><strong>Raising Awareness On Cryptocurrencies</strong></h2>
As <a href="https://www.abc.es/economia/abci-bitcoin-llega-congreso-diputados-202010081948_noticia.html">reported</a> on Oct. 8 by local newspaper ABC, all the Spanish MPs of the country's lower house, the Congreso de los Diputados (Congress of Deputies) were sent Bitcoins equivalent to 1 euro.

The Congress of Deputies is the lower house of Spain’s parliament comprising a total of 350 members. The members have also been emailed details on how to access the Bitcoin wallet.

The initiative is launched by blockchain education platform Tutellus and Observatorio Blockchain “with the aim of raising awareness about the ‘transcendental’ role that cryptocurrencies are going to have in the transformation of the economy and society.”

The publication quoted sources from the organization saying:

“We have explained to the deputies that we are in a time of profound changes in the use of money, in addition to highlighting the important role that cryptocurrencies have today.”
<h2><strong>Bitcoins Sent To Spanish MPs Are Not Donations</strong></h2>
Founder of Tutellus, Miguel Caballero, who launched the initiative says that the bitcoin sent to the 350 Spanish deputies “is not a donation”, adding:

“Many deputies probably already have some experience in the use of cryptocurrencies, but we would like those who are not yet familiar with the new money, to have the opportunity to get in touch with it”

Caballero continues:

“With a digital euro on the near horizon, we believe that our deputies, as citizens’ representatives, should be aware of the benefits and risks of cryptocurrencies.”

Over the past years, Spanish banks seem to be getting more interested towards cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. In early October, the <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/news/ecb-publishes-a-comprehensive-report-on-digital-euro/">European Central Bank</a> announced that it would look into a digital euro by 2021.
