Extortionist Responsible For Threatening Albert Heijn For Bitcoin Convicted

The North-Holland court has successfully convicted the man who extorted Ahold, the parent company of Albert Heijn for paying a large amount of bitcoin to him. The 23-year old man is sentenced for two years in prison, one of which is provisionally suspended. Furthermore, according to the court orders, he will also stay on probation for three whole years after that.

Ahold started receiving threatening emails since 2016, which stated that if the company didn't pay the asked amount to the sender, he would poison all the Alber Heijn supermarket products. The extortionist further also send packages with poisonous substances to Ahold, but the act was stopped before any harm could be caused.

Ahold informed in the court that it did not pay any amount to the blackmailer and the customers were not affected too.

Suspect Sentenced For Two Years In Prison

After the investigation was started, a 20-year old suspect was taken in custody for the same. According to the investigation, the suspect was found active on Dark Net for quite some time where he used to sell manuals and templates about how to acquire counterfeit money. Some undercover officers succeeded in purchasing two such manuals from him.

The twenty-year-old then opened up to the court telling that he was threatened by someone else to do these acts and that he did not know anything about Ahold. The court didn't find this believable.

He was also being alleged of trying to scam Apple for sending him a laptop. According to the reports, the suspect used someone else's credit card and Apple account to scam Apple into sending him a laptop, but there wasn't enough evidence to prove him guilty.

Despite the public prosecutor demanding four years jail for the suspect, he got a lower sentence due to the fact that he was cleared of the Apple scam and that the Albert Heijn case took three years already. The extortionist came clean of any other criminal records before he was convicted for this case.
