The cybersecurity firm, Carbon 'Black's has discovered a secondary component used by mining hackers for <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/glossary#metadata">metadata</a> seizure as a source of income.

Per the <a href="https://www.carbonblack.com/resources/threat-research/access-mining/">report</a> today, the malware was combined with the well-known crypto mining botnet to steal system access information. That information gotten is reportedly sold on the dark web.

The attack from the mining hackers, when combined, are classified as "Access Mining." This discovery perhaps shows a more significant trend of commodity malware popping out to mask a darker purpose. 

Perse, the anonymous mining hackers, are probably turning to metadata seizure, in the wake of lower cryptocurrency prices.

Therefore, cybersecurity professionals are likely to change in the way they classify, investigate, and protect themselves from threats.

The trending 2018 <a href="https://www.cryptoknowmics.com/crypto/monero-explained-dr-daniel-kim-founder-of-sweetwater-digital-consulting-anarchapulco-2019/">Monero </a>crypto-mining botnet contained a secondary component that could capture, IP addresses, usernames, and passwords.

Carbon Black researchers, Marian Liang and Greg Foss noted the botnet campaign collects secret data. Those data collected for the past two years and generated million from the process 

About 500,000 computers got hurt with the Monero crypto-jacking mining protocol, XMRig, which hacked 8,900 Monero. Most of the victims reside in Russia, Eastern Europe, and the Asian Pacific.

The metadata collecting software used to hack the computers is a patchwork of programs taken from open-source code on GitHub. The mining hackers modified Eternal Blue and Mimikatz on XMRig, which enable them to innovate.

The report further noted that the mining hackers utilized security data as a secondary source of income — one infected machine sales at an average of $6.75 on dark web markets. Hence, the 500,000 is worth $1.69 million.

Carbon Black says the 'group's assets sit near $3.29 million, at $9,000 per Monero coin.

Mining hackers can rent the Infected machines for 24 to 48 hours as a source of passive income. However, this depends on the 'machine's owner and location, and machine values can skyrocket.

Foss and Liang added that "Access Mining" could be reasons for dropping Monero prices following the 2018 bear market.
