Roskomnadzor, Russia’s internet censorship agency, has issued a warning against the world’s largest crypto exchange, Binance. Not only this, the agency has also added the primary website of the exchange to its prohibited domains list. Binance has revealed this on Thursday on its Russian Telegram channel. In the announcement, it is also mentioned that this action has been taken because the exchange was offering details on how to acquire digital currencies.
Binance Received Notification From Roskomnadzor
As Binance has announced this news on its telegram channel, it was stated, “we received a notification from Roskomnadzor of the Russian Federation about the inclusion of the site https://www.binance.com in the domain name register containing information prohibited for distribution in Russia.”
According to the exchange, they have never received any prior warning regarding this from any of the Russian regulators or law enforcement bodies of the country. Even though it has been added to the prohibited list, it is mentioned by the exchange that they will continue to offer their services. While saying this, the exchange has also mentioned that all the funds of the users are completely safe with the exchange
Cryptocurrency Status in Russia is Unclear
It is not the first time that Roskomnadzor has blacklisted any domain related to crypto exchange. Earlier also, the agency had blacklisted BestChange.ru, which is an aggregator of OTC crypto providers. Even though the country has labelled digital currencies as property, the status of cryptocurrency in the country is still unclear. Digital currencies cannot be used as a mode of payment in Russia, which is among the countries with the biggest downloads. Recently, several bills related to cryptocurrencies have also been passed by the Finance Ministry of the country. In this bill, the ministry has criminalized all the activities that are related to cryptocurrency and its trading.
