The U.S. Supreme Court <a href="https://www.natlawreview.com/article/liu-v-sec-supreme-court-refines-sec-s-equitable-remedy-disgorgement" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">recently</a> rolled out some new regulatory limitations for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The major purpose of these regulations is to reduce the fines which the SEC has been imposing on various crypto and blockchain firms. With this ruling, it has also changed the fines which were there in several notable crypto cases.

The US Supreme Court has asked the SEC that they cannot impose any fines which are known as disgorgements on any of the crypto and blockchain firms. If there will be any kind of penalty related to this it will be directly sent to the victims for their benefit.
<h2>US Supreme Court said punishment should match the crime</h2>
It has been mentioned by the U.S. Supreme Court that the ruling will be applicable on all the defendants but this is most important for the crypto and blockchain firms. Now the financial penalties will be based on the crime as it has been mentioned in the ruling that punishment should completely match the crime. There are a lot of huge penalties which has been imposed by the SEC and one of the prominent ones was the case against BitClave. In this case, the SEC has asked the crypto firm to pay $3.8 million interest and an extra penalty.
<h2>The maximum fine cannot be beyond $500,000</h2>
In this recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, it has also looked after the case of the couple who have stolen $500,000. In this case, the SEC has imposed several fines and along with this, they will have to pay interest and civil penalties as well. After this recent ruling, it has been clarified that the maximum fine that the SEC could impose on the two cannot exceed $500,000. This amount will be further used to repay the victims related to this case who lost their money.
