South Korea's POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) has set itself to provide diplomas stored on blockchain technology to its new graduates.

A local media<a href="https://www.mk.co.kr/news/society/view/2020/02/125465/"> reported</a> as coronavirus has been threatening the world, POSTECH believed it was no longer safe for graduates to gather at the graduation ceremony. The administration determined to provide graduates with an option to receive their diplomas online, instead of delaying the event. Several researchers have been found looking for blockchain as a solution to contain the Corona Virus. <h2>POSTECH Worried Due To Corona Virus Outbreak</h2>
On 7th February, POSTECH would provide an email letter consisting of a QR code connected with the blockchain-stored diploma to its 828 new graduates. A blockchain-based certification service 'broof' has created these blockchain-stored diplomas. ICONLOOP, a firm from South Korea, started broof in May 2019. The 'broof' service has been allowing users to view, issue and manage online certificates through public blockchain network provided by ICONLOOP. 

One official from the university stated due to Corona Virus breakdown, and it was not possible to organize the graduation ceremony at that time. He added that from now onwards, a student would be able to receive the diploma without visiting the school. 
<h2>Earlier Initiatives From The University</h2>
A report stated that earlier in June 2019, POSTECH utilized broof's technology while issuing blockchain certificates of blockchain CEO course to its graduates. Blockchain-based certificates were not subject to any modification or fraud when compared to traditional online diplomas. Recipients would be able to get information via an encrypted path.

Besides this, other institutions that provide higher education were investigating digital academic credentials. For instance, MIT Media Lab was creating a set of tools to manage and store certificates that would be cryptographically approved on the Bitcoin blockchain.
