Supdrive is a new blockchain-based NFT video game from Dom Hofmann, one of the co-founders of the popular video-sharing app Vine. In the announcement tweet, Hofmann described the project as “an on-chain fantasy console game where the games themselves are NFTs.”
Dom Hofmann, co-founder of Vine and the creator of Byte and Peach has a new project called Supdrive, an “on-chain fantasy game console,” explaining that the “games themselves are NFTs.”
Hofmann compared Supdrive to Art Blocks, an Ethereum NFT initiative that lets creators make programs to procedurally generate art, which is then stored on the blockchain.
Though the programs always create the same art for a given seed but changing the seed changes what the art finally ends up looking like. People then buy the NFTs for an Art Block project, which will contain a seed, letting them generate the same art.
“ You can think of it sort of like Artblocks for games. These games will all run on the Supdrive Virtual Firmware, a toolkit that allows games to be written in concise instructions that are gas friendly and ideal for on-chain storage.”
The Vine co-founder revealed that the games featured in the project will mimic old-school arcade-style titles like Galaga, Pacman, and Asteroid and will gradually become more sophisticated.
While every Supdrive game will come in multiple NFT editions, every edition is completely original with varying qualities, color palettes, difficulty levels, and special abilities, depending on the purchased version.
Supdrive is currently running on Ethereum’s mainnet, and is coded in a way that is “gas-friendly and ideal for on-chain storage.” At the moment, the project is still in the developmental stages. The launch date is scheduled for sometime in October with plans for community updates “every week or so”.
Hofmann is also the creator of an NFT project called Blitmap and a co-founder of DAO-driven NFT project Nouns.
